My New Adventures in Knitting

Published by Cara Lageson at 4:37 PM under Art,Cara,Life

I’m going to go ahead and put this out there… I like knitting.

I know what you all must be thinking…(LOSER – cough, cough!) but it really IS fun, and as I’ve found, quite therapeutic! I spend so much of my time tweeting on my iPhone, texting or doing stuff of my computer, but none of that really amounts to anything tangible. Well, except for a killer network of sweet Cleveland tweeps and friends of course. When I knit, not only am I keeping my hands busy (and removing my iPhone from my paws for once), but I’m creating something one of a kind! It’s actually quite addicting to be honest. Plus, it helps keep me from the dangers of..**DOM-DOM-DOMMM**..late night snacking. Don’t ask me how I got into that horrible habit, but I’m the worst, chronic, night-snacker you’ll ever meet.

So, about a couple of weeks ago I embarked down the “first-time-knitters” path and decided to make my boyfriend, Jason, a scarf.  Again, I know what you’re thinking…

Late night knitting at home

“God help that poor man.  It’s probably going to be the most hideous thing ever”.  But, actually, it didn’t turn out so bad at all!  Yeah, I made a few (A LOT) of mistakes along the way and there might be a couple (SEVERAL) holes, but I caught on fast.  Plus, I picked a pretty handsome looking yarn if I do say so myself.  I also learned how to “frog”, which basically means I sucked so bad that I had to remove entire lines of knitting to fix it. It WAS my first project though, so I suppose I was bound to screw it up a few times.

Now I’ve gotten the scarf to the point where it’s almost finished, my Mom, Aunt and I just have to crochet around the edges to make it look finished (and cover up the mistakes I made..lol). And Jason says he’s pretty excited to get it, and even more pumped that I actually MADE him something. (See, ladies! Guys like homemade gifts too!)

So, yeah…basically my next task is to learn how to crochet. I wonder how that’s going to turn out. I actually found this really cool site called threadbanger.com that can teach me how to knit trendy things! Maybe Jason would like a “super cool” hat to go with his neat scarf. LOL! Wow, now I think I’M even starting to feel bad for him!

**Lingering Side Note**

I’ve got a few gals together who would actually like to start knitting for the homeless people of Cleveland. Let me know if you are interested! I think it’s a great idea and an even better opportunity to bound!

Nothing wrong with enjoying knitting — it’s one of the fastest growing hobbies among under-30 women! The whole “Stitch ‘n’ Bitch” thing and other similar books/knitting groups have really succeeded in getting women interested and making it fun and contemporary.

(Disclosure: My wife works in marketing for Jo-Ann Stores, so I hear about this stuff all the time!)

Oh, almost forgot: My wife crocheted me a scarf our first Christmas as a couple, back in 1989. I’m still wearing that scarf today. That’s quality!

I think the whole knitting thing is cute and I’ll be very proud to rock that scarf!
